In 1993 Dr Margaret Colquhoun founded The Life Science Trust for the practice and research of Goethean Science and Art in Scotland. Her legacy continues in the Life Science Centre, which provides a unique teaching space, library, learning resources and outside class rooms in our landscaped grounds. Since 2019 we have joined the Ruskin Mill Land Trust and work in collaboration with the Field Centre as part of a broader research programme under the umbrella of the Ruskin Mill Trust.

Our work at the Life Science Centre continues to focus on:

  • Introductory and experience workshops that bring us into a closer and more conscious relationship with nature.

  • Teaching Goethean Science on the basis of observational study of nature and natural phenomena.

  • Research into the Goethean methodology of artistic and scientific enquiry, leading from sense perception to sensorial imagination and insights that can enable us to become co-creative in nature.

  • Providing a space for other holistic traditions to share and teach their practice, with particular focus on Herbology, Biodynamics, Waldorf Teacher training, art therapy and social pedagogy.

  • Collaboration and exchange with Anthroposophic organisations worldwide to further the understanding and practice of the Goethean Scientific method.

  • Guiding the masterplan for the site development and its sustainable organic architecture.

  • Hosting Goethean Science research meetings for practitioners to share and exchange findings on a regular basis.

At the core of all our activities lies the desire to bring us into a deeper connection with our own nature, our individual creativity and the world that surrounds us and to express this in a harmonious and balanced way.

If you wish to advance into the infinite, explore the finite in all directions

Many of our projects are beyond the bounds of Pishwanton, practitioners and experts travel to projects and bring the insights and findings of our work into a new context and to different organisations. Additional information can also be found on our web archive where you can find examples of previous classes and projects.

Often it is through the accelerated separation of our daily lives from nature and natural cycles that an increased awareness and desire for a greater unity and connectedness with life and the cosmos arises, but it requires a conscious effort on our part to intentionally create it.

Anthroposophy is a path of inquiry which unites the spiritual in the human being with the spiritual in the universe.
